ANNOUNCER:  Welcome to the More Photos’ Radio Photography Spotlight brought to you by Morephotos.com helping professional photographers with all their internet needs world wide. Also brought to you by Labimages.com. Finally, an e-commerce solution for professional photo labs that makes sense. Now here’s your host, Damien Allen.

DAMIEN: Good morning and welcome to More Photos Radio. My name is Damien Allen and today on the telephone we have Mr. Rick Ferro of The Ferro Photography School in Jacksonville, Florida. Good morning and welcome to the program, Rick.

RICK: Good morning, Damien, how are you?

DAMIEN: I’m a little bit chillier than you are down there, but not too bad; not too bad at all sir. Welcome to the program. You’re going to be speaking at the WPPI Conference. Could you tell us a little bit about the workshop you’re going to be doing down there?

RICK: I’m very excited this year, Damien, to be at WPPI. I’m doing something totally different that I haven’t done before. I’m going to be doing a two hour live performance. I’m basically going to go and show people how to properly meter things and then getting into a little bit about posing. I’m going to make them do whatever they want, and then I’m going to go back in and kind of set it up a little bit different and make it more dramatic. I’m going to work with hands and legs and really come up with some contemporary images; very dramatic. The Olive Romance I call it and really come up with some special things. Then of course show a couple of slide shows that I’ve done here. I think it’s going to be very, very entertaining.

DAMIEN: What do you hope the participants in this workshop will take away from it?

RICK: Well I think there are a few things they will take away. Of course, there are a lot of people out there that are not using their meter. I know that and visual is all about metering and custom white balancing so I’m going to show them, and they will be able to see it live on the jumbo screen how I do all this, but I think it’s really going to be comfortable for them to know that they can get, because I’m going to be shooting by the way continuous lights which I’m going to be shooting with window lights and most of us don’t do that as a photographer. So once they see that, I think they are going to get more comfortable and they will take that metering home with them and hopefully their images will come out just as good as hopefully I’m going to pull when I do the show.

DAMIEN: What day and times will your workshop be held during WPPI?

RICK: You know, Damien, to be honest with you they are now changing my date again, because of the fact that I am building a stage show, and so they might have to go ahead and look and keep posted of when I’m going to be shown, because they had me down for one day and now I think they are moving me to a Tuesday, but I’m not sure. So I can’t give you a good answer on that yet, but they are just going to have to look for it. The name of the show is Contemporary Bridal Posing: Live on Stage by Rick Ferro. So they will just look when the schedule is.

DAMIEN: How did you get started with WPPI?

RICK: Wow. Gee I’ve been with them for over 20 years. Actually it really did start because as a photographer if you are going to get serious you have to study with mentors. And I had two of the best in the world ever, Don Blair and Monte Zucker. So I studied with them and just did everything I possibly could to learn the right way and then I figured if I’m going to learn that, I want to go onto the best organization. Of course it was a lot smaller then, but it’s just been amazing what I have gotten from WPPI. WPPI is really for me and Deb a family, almost more than just a convention itself. We’ve met so many people, the owners, Mr. Sheenan, Steve Sheenan and his wife. They are just unbelievable. The company just can’t do enough for that company.

DAMIEN: Speaking of your wife, Deborah, we have checked out your website, and we know that you have won several awards and so has your wife, Deborah. How did the two of you go from being photographers to teaching in such a whirlwind scale?

RICK: Well we thank God for whatever we have. It does take a lot of training to get where we are at this point. A couple of years ago, we were very fortunate to get the Leadership Award that was given to us from the United Nations so that was one of our highlights. WE have been all over the world. Last year we taught in Italy and 2 years ago we taught in Spain and Ireland, but my wife and I met about 9 years ago. We were really lucky we had the same passion and it’s just one of those perfect fits and we wrote books together and we are just doing everything together. She teaches Photoshop and Painter, and of course, I do the lighting and posing. So really blessed and lucky that we can make this all work together as a family and we’re excited. We’re actually building a new studio. So we are really excited.

DAMIEN: Now you already mentioned that people don’t use their meter enough, or they are not working with the light correctly. Are there any other tips you could give the listening audience on being a better photographer?

RICK: You might laugh at this one now, Damien, but the biggest tip I could ever give is nothing to do with photography. The biggest tip is personality. I have seen more photographers that are at a wedding and just have no personality. Personality is 60% of getting the clients to do what you want. The 40% is taking the picture and maybe posing them. So that is something, and I don’t think anybody can be trained at that. But personality, personality, personality is the key. As far as the technical part, I teach, and thank God for Will Crockett who I learned from especially with the digital era proper metering, how to meter, and of course, custom white balance is what I learned from Will, and of course now, I am sharing with everybody else out there too. So those are the key elements, personality and getting that exposure.

DAMIEN: What’s going to be new for Rick Ferro Photography? Are you going to be doing any more workshops or conferences in 2010? Any new classes, any new products coming out?

RICK: Yeah, Damien. I’m working on book 8, 9, and 10.  I have that hopefully coming out. We have a lot of stuff going on with Will Crockett and WPPI. I’ll be doing Texas school again. I’m going up to PPA, Colorado Workshop, I’m doing Florida School. Here’s a good one for you. Damien, you’re going to be the first one to know about this. I’m actually getting ready to announce a 3 day seminar at Disney World. So we’re thinking about…I will be posting it soon. We are only going to allow about 30 people to come to this class and it’s going to be unbelievable. And also I think I’m going to be doing a six city tour with Westcott and BWC Lab too. And we’ll let everybody know about that in advance.

DAMIEN: Very nice. What is the website and contact information if the audience wants to find out more about Ferro Photography School or more about the work you’re doing.

RICK: Let me just give you that again. It’s www.ferrophotographyschool.com. Once you get into that site. We created that to help out photographers as our way of giving back and if you go to lessons on that page, you can print out Photoshop and photography lessons you can print out and work with that later on too. My regular website is www.rickferro.com. The other site that is absolutely fantastic and it’s free it’s the www.shootsmarter.com. That site is…I write articles for them once a month and everything is printable, and I think I’m on about the 28th column now and there’s plenty of things in there. Everything is free once you get in it. Basically just log in and put your email and there’s just all kinds of stuff. How to meter…everything is printable which is really, really cool.   I recommend everybody to go to that ShootSmarter.com and check out their paragraphs and articles.

DAMIEN: Thank you very much for talking with us today, Rick.

RICK: It was great talking to you, Damien. Like I said, before Damien, I’m at Disney World so I’m going to tell Mickey and Minnie you said hello, and I hope everybody has a great holiday.

DAMIEN: You too as well, sir. I strongly encourage our listeners to attend Rick Ferro’s classes and to attend the WPPI Conference in beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada, March 4th – 11th. Thank you for joining us today. I am Damien Allen from the studio. Everybody have a great day and Happy Holidays.
