ANNOUNCER:  Welcome to the More Photos’ Radio Photography Spotlight brought to you by helping professional photographers with all their internet needs world wide. Also brought to you by Finally, an e-commerce solution for professional photo labs that makes sense. Now here’s your host, Damien Allen.  DAMIEN: Good afternoon and welcome to More Photos Radio. My name is Damien Allen and today we have with us on the telephone is Vickie Taufer of V Gallery Studios. Good afternoon, folks, welcome to the Program, Vickie.
VICKIE: Hi, how are you doing?
DAMIEN: I’m doing just fine. I hope you’re doing well too on this cold and blustery Monday morning while it’s cold and blustery here in Michigan.
VICKIE: It is here too in Illinois.
DAMIEN: Indeed. Indeed. You’re going to be speaking at the upcoming conference at WPPI.  Could you please tell us a little bit about what your class is going to be about?
VICKIE: The class I’m going to be teaching is actually titled V Gallery Unleashed and it’s going to be focusing on how over the past 10 years we have really developed a high end brand for our portrait photography at V Gallery and over the last couple of years we actually created a special limited edition that benefited the local animal shelter called Dog Days of Summer and with that we completely created a brand new market in central Illinois for pet photography, and we carried over that high end brand and really brought in and generated a lot of new income for our studio. So I’m going to be talking about this in class besides different tips and tricks for photographing pets, but how to actually create a market. Whether it’s pet photography, or maybe even creating a different type of portrait photography in your market, you can use a lot of these things, ideas and marketing tips I’ll be giving you that can be used across the board for different types of photography. Another exciting thing that we’ll be doing in our program that you’ll want to be sure and check out is we’ve worked with a lot of our different vendors that we love who create a lot of our products and things for our studio, but they have donated some of their different products and services, gift certificates that we are going to be giving away…a ton of prizes at our program. So be sure and check it out.
DAMIEN: What day and time will your class be held during the conference? And where can participants find you?
VICKIE: The class is going to be on Tuesday, March 9th from 8:00 am to 10:00 am in the studio B room.
DAMIEN: What do you hope your participants are going to take away at the end of this class?
VICKIE: Obviously I’m going to be talking about a lot of the different tips and tricks that we use when photographing pets, because it’s obviously different than when you’re photographing people, but I also want people to realize that they are going to be coming away with a lot of great marketing and business ideas that can be used for any type of photography business, because the same type of rules and things would apply.
DAMIEN: How long have you been photographers and how’d you get started with WPPI, Vickie?
VICKIE: I actually have been in the business about 10 years. I started off as a special education teacher and photography was a hobby. I started our business 10 years ago in the basement of my husband and I’s first home, and about 8 years ago we renovated an old bowling alley into our Main Street studio which is where we currently are. We’ve got about 7000 square foot of gallery space and studio. And as far as WPPI goes I started attending conferences and conventions since the beginning of our business, because I realized the importance of education in WPPI and actually I entered their competitions starting in 2005 and have won their grand award in the portrait category and so then in 2006 we have been involved with teaching and educating every year since 2006 at WPPI.
DAMIEN: I checked out your website and the photography is just absolutely awesome. There is some great pictures up there. You’re not only an educator; you’re also an author and a key note speaker. What are the challenges of wearing so many hats?
VICKIE: Well the obvious of just running a business. If that were the only hat you would wear, there never seems like there is enough hours in the day. So when you have all these different hats that just amplifies, and so we found that the key to success in all these different areas and still have a successful business and studio and obviously with the traveling and teaching it’s being able to delegate. So definitely the gallery is a team effort. We have employees that we entrust with a lot of our responsibilities so that we are able to still travel and teach and have a successful studio back home.
DAMIEN: V Gallery has been so successful and you’re traveling to the various concerts and giving these key notes speeches and giving these classes, could you share one or two marketing tips that would help your fellow photographers out?
VICKIE: Yes, definitely. I think the first thing that we did years ago, and we still do that is so important especially if there is somebody out there just starting out with their business. They have a limited budget; the biggest thing is that you get your work out in the community and so being visible, teaming up with vendors in your community who would want the same clientele and putting displays, I call them relationship displays in their business. So if you’re a children’s photographer, you know, obviously getting your work on display in the children’s clothing boutique, even a hair salon or spa. For pet photography you would want to display in the veterinarian office, the little dog boutique, you know, just getting your work out there, because you’re going to sell what you show. Now of course everything has been online over the last few years, so it’s really important, one of the most inexpensive ways to advertise is to, you know, using email, Facebook, Twitter to encourage people to really search out their options in the social media avenue.
DAMIEN: What’s going to be new for V Gallery in 2010? Will you be doing any other workshops or conferences? Are there some new projects coming up?
VICKIE: Yeah, we actually have a handful of new things. As far as workshops and conferences, we actually have a 2000 square foot addition to our studio that we call V Gallery Haven and it’s a place where we can host very intimate workshops for photographers that we teach or we bring in other photographers to teach, and you can find that information out on our website at and in March we have a Selling Experience workshop coming up and that’s going to be taught by my husband, Jed, and I. And then in September we are teaching a workshop called Let Your Light Shine and that’s going to be in September. As far as other things going on at the studio, we’ve been in the process of adopting a baby over the last couple of years, and we think that is going to happen this year so we’re really in the process of adjusting our business model to figure out a way that will allow me to spend more time at home and potentially we’re in the process right now of having a photographer on staff to help us do that.
DAMIEN: Could I get you kindly share the website address and contact information with the listening audience please.
VICKIE: Yeah. You can find out more information about V Gallery and what we’re up to at or you can call our phone number (309) 266-8877 and definitely you can follow us and check us out on Twitter and Facebook as well.
DAMIEN: Congratulations on your impending arrival and all things that are going on with V Gallery, and we wish you wonderful luck in 2010. We thank you for joining with us today.
VICKIE: That is great. Thank you.
DAMIEN: We encourage our listeners to attend Vickie Taufer’s workshop and to attend the WPPI Conference in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada, March 10th – 12th, 2010.   You’ve been listening to More Photos Radio. My name is Damien Allen. Everybody have a great afternoon.
